Straw Threading

Date: March 12, 2024
Author:Lara Abbas, Occupational Therapist

Why do this activity?

  • Threading is an excellent activity to help children develop fine motor skills essential for drawing, writing, do up buttons, tie shoelaces, opening lunch boxes, and more.
  • Threading also helps to develop eye-hand coordination, bilateral coordination, and concentration skills.
  • Children learn mathematical concepts such as counting and sequencing.
  • Children learn language skills as they name colors.

Materials needed:

  • Straws cut into small pieces
  • String or shoelace with a knot at one end

How to:

Using your shoelace, lacing lace, or just a plain bit of yarn, thread the tiny bits of straw. Look at those fingers, go!

(Strict and active supervision is required at all times)
